The New York Yankees today selected nine players in Rounds 2-10 of the 2021 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, following yesterday’s selection of SS Trey Sweeney in Round 1.

With their second-round selection, the Yankees drafted right-handed pitcher Brendan Beck out of Stanford University. Beck, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior, earned Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year and All-Pac 12 First-Team honors in 2021 after going 9-3 with a 3.15 ERA (108.2IP, 38ER) across 17 appearances (15 starts). The Corona, Calif., native recorded 143 strikeouts this past season, the fourth-highest total in the nation and the sixth-most in program history, while issuing just 26 walks. Beck was also named a First-Team All-American by the ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association) this past collegiate season. The 22-year-old was tabbed by Baseball America as the No. 81 overall prospect in the draft and was rated by MLB Pipeline as the No. 99 overall prospect.

“Brendan has quality stuff and can really pitch in addition to being a great overall athlete. He was originally a position player and then eventually became Stanford’s Friday night starter. We were really happy to get him, and we see him as a Major League starting pitcher.”

In the third round, the Yankees selected left-handed pitcher Brock Selvidge out of Hamilton High School (Ariz.). Selvidge, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior, went 5-2 with a 2.41 ERA (52.1IP, 18ER) in 11 appearances this past season. At the plate, the 18-year-old hit .304 (21-for-69) with 17R, 6 doubles, 6HR, 21RBI and 12BB in 23 games as a batter in 2021. The Chandler, Ariz., native was ranked by Perfect Game as the top pitcher in the state and the No. 2 overall prospect in Arizona. Selvidge is currently committed to LSU.

“Last summer we were able to see Brock quite a bit, and we thought he would potentially be one of the top high school pitchers in this draft. We were happy with his progress this season, and at the combine he was dynamite. We were very pleased he was available when we made our pick, and we feel he is a future left-handed starter.”

With their fourth-round selection, the Yankees drafted second baseman Cooper Bowman out of the University of Louisville. Bowman, a 6-foot-0, 205-pound, right-handed hitter, was named Second Team All-ACC Conference this past season after batting .293 (56-for-191) with 42R, 7 doubles, 8HR, 22RBI and 23BB in 48 games. The Rapid City, S.D., native stole 20 bases in 2021, the second-most in the ACC. The 21-year-old played two years at Iowa Western Community College before transferring to Louisville before the 2021 campaign.

“Cooper is an athletic infielder who had a heck of a year. He possesses good bat-to-ball skills, and he has a plus run tool. Defensively, he can play second base and shortstop, and he’s tough as nails. He’s a player that really grew on us.”

The Yankees’ fifth-round pick was first baseman Tyler Hardman, a redshirt junior out of the University of Oklahoma. The right-handed hitter led the Big 12 with a .397 (89-for-224) batting average to go along with 49R, 19 doubles, 2 triples, 12HR, 49RBI and 34BB in 55 games with the Sooners. The 22-year-old was a First Team All-Big 12 selection and earned First Team All-American honors by the NCBWA (National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association), ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association) and Perfect Game. The Corona, Calif., native was also named one of four finalists for the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award, recognizing the best hitter in Division I programs throughout Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Hardman was originally selected out of high school by the Colorado Rockies in the 37th round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

“Tyler can really hit and has a power vibe reminiscent of Luke Voit. He also has solid contact skills and he hits the ball hard. Lots of coaches we respect said he was the hardest out they faced all year.”
