The New York Yankees announced a series of roster moves prior to their Saturday game in Baltimore, with star reliever Michael King landing on the 60-day injured list with a right elbow fracture. He is expected to miss the rest of the 2022 season, Aaron Boone confirmed.
Additionally, Tim Locastro was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Clarke Schmidt was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Shane Greene was signed to a Major League contract and selected from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
King, 27, was in the midst of a career year for the Yankees, pitching to a sensational 2.29 ERA with 66 strikeouts and just 16 walks over 51 innings pitched.
After throwing a pitch in the 7th inning of Friday night's win vs. the Orioles, King immediately walked off the mound in frustration.
The Yankees pitching staff has arguably been the team's best asset over the course of their spectacular season this year, but the loss of King along with the inconsistencies of Aroldis Chapman and Jonathan Loáisiga could be something the front office will look to address as the Bombers vie for a 28th World Series championship.
Reports around baseball have suggested the Yankees are considering a move for an outfielder like Andrew Benintendi or even Juan Soto, but with the August 2 trade deadline looming, shoring up the bullpen might be a more pressing need for the team.
Entering play Saturday, Yankees pitchers rank first or second in the American League in ERA (3.16), SV (32), K (870), BB (242), K/9 (9.15), BB/9 (2.55), K/BB (3.60), HR (92), WHIP (1.08) and BAA (.216).
