Major League Baseball's trade deadline is just days away and one of the game's brightest young stars could be on the move.
Juan Soto, winner of this year's Home Run Derby and a two-time All-Star already at the age of 23, reportedly turned down what would've been a record-breaking extension offer in the range of 15 years and $440 million from the Washington Nationals last week, and is expected to be traded before the August 2 trade deadline.
The New York Yankees are one of the teams kicking the proverbial tires on a potential deal for Soto, and Jack Curry tweeted Saturday that they have in fact reached out to the Nationals.
The lefty hitting outfielder is once again among the most lethal batters in the game this year, slashing .250/.403/.494 with 20 home runs, 43 RBI and an MLB-high 79 walks through his first 92 games this season.
In the past, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo has stated on record that the team would not entertain any trade offers for Soto, instead centering the team's rebuilding plans around the young superstar slugger. But after Ken Rosenthal's report that Soto had rejected the Nats' extension offer, he instantly became one of the most coveted trade assets to hit the market in years.
The Nationals have been the worst team in baseball this season with a 31-64 record entering play Saturday. What's more, the team's farm system is also among the lowest-ranked groups in the Majors.
Teams in the mix to acquire Soto will undoubtedly be forced to part ways with a significant package of players, but the Yankees do have a number of marquee prospects in the minor league ranks if they wanted to do business with Washington.
Leading the team's prospect rankings for 2022 is a pair of talented shortstops – Anthony Volpe (21) and Oswald Peraza (22), both of whom have had strong seasons thus far in the minors. Ranked behind them at No. 3 in the Yankees farm system is the much-hyped outfielder Jasson Dominguez, whose otherworldly array of physical tools and talents have earned him the nickname "The Martian."
As baseball fans know, no prospect is a sure thing no matter what ranking they might receive along the course of their professional development, and considering Soto's youth and two-plus years of team control he is sure to command an immense return.
The Yankees have been the winningest team in baseball all season long with all eyes focused on adding a 28th World Series title to their mantle. The addition of a talent like Soto to an outfield already consisting of two all-world All-Star athletes in Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton would only further enhance their chances.
Recent reports have also indicated that the Yankees could have their eyes on Andrew Benintendi of the Royals should a deal for Soto not materialize, but every team across the league will be eagerly waiting to find out where Soto might land.
