The Yankees acquire 1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion and cash considerations from the Mariners in exchange for Juan Then. Encarnacion would hit 13 homers in 44 games with the Yankees.
2019: Ruth jersey sold at auction
A Babe Ruth Yankees jersey from 1928-1930 fetches $5.64 million at auction, making it the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold. The previous record was $4.4 million, held by a 1920 Ruth jersey.
2011: Switch hit superstar
Mark Teixeira homers from both sides of the plate for the 11th time in his career, tying Chili Davis and Eddie Murray for the MLB record. He would finish his career with 14 games homering from both sides of the plate, tied with Nick Swisher for the MLB record.
2008: Chien-Ming Wang suffers foot injury
While running the bases in the sixth inning of an eventual 13-0 win at Houston, Chien-Ming Wang suffers a partially torn tendon and a sprained right foot. The injury costs him the rest of the season. Wang, who had finished second in the Cy Young balloting as recently as 2006, is never the same after returning in 2009.
2005: New stadium announced and Giambi walks off
Joining Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Governor George Pataki and team officials, George Steinbrenner announces plans to build the new Yankee Stadium. That night, Jason Giambi hits a walk-off homer off Pittsburgh’s Jose Mesa in the 10th inning to give the Yankees a 7-5 win over the Pirates.
1976: 10-player trade is made
On the same date of the Yankees’ soon-to-be canceled acquisition of Vida Blue (more on that story later this week), the club completes a 10-player deal. The Yankees acquire RHP Doyle Alexander, LHP Jimmy Freeman, C Elrod Hendricks, LHP Ken Holtzman and LHP Grant Jackson from the Orioles in exchange for C Rick Dempsey, LHP Tippy Martinez, LHP Rudy May, LHP Scott McGregor and RHP Dave Pagan.
1972: Andy Pettitte is born
Andy Pettitte is born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Pettitte would go on to win five World Series with the Yankees and is the franchise’s all-time postseason wins and strikeouts leader.
1958: Wade Boggs is born
Future Hall of Famer Wade Boggs is born in Omaha, Nebraska. Boggs played for the Yankees from 1993-1997, winning the 1996 World Series.
1957: Billy Martin’s first Yankees departure
The Yankees trade Billy Martin, Woodie Held, Bob Martyn and Ralph Terry to the Kansas City Athletics for Ryne Duren, Jim Pisoni and Harry Simpson
1923: Gehrig’s debut
Four days shy of his 20th birthday, Lou Gehrig makes his Major League debut against the St. Louis Browns at Yankee Stadium. He comes in as a defensive replacement during a 10-0 rout by the Yankees.
