According to Joel Sherman of The Post, Hicks received a second opinion on the elbow from Dr. Neal ElAttrache and was recommended "a few more weeks of rest before a further evaluation," Sherman reports.
With that timetable, Hicks would likely be out until the conclusion of the regular season, putting his readiness for the playoffs in question.
Tommy John surgery has not been recommended as of yet, but has not been ruled out for the 29-year-old.
Injuries have limited Hicks to 59 appearances for the Yankees this year, and with the recent season-ending loss of backup outfielder Mike Tauchman to a calf strain, the Yankees' outfield depth chart keeps taking hits.
Giancarlo Stanton is still in Tampa recovering from a PCL strain in his right knee, where he took some live at-bats and participated in running drills on Tuesday. Manager Aaron Boone said he was not sure if Stanton was quite at 100% but "he's moving in the right direction," Meredith Marakovits reported Tuesday.
Stanton hopes to be back in the majors for the Yankees' next homestand, which begins on September 17 against the Angels. His return would help assuage the loss of depth in Hicks and Tauchman, but it's difficult to predict what kind of player he'll be after missing all but nine games this season.
The Yankees face a relatively easy schedule through the rest of the regular season, but with all eyes set on October, the team needs all hands on deck to make their push through the playoffs.
Stay tuned for the latest news and developments on Hicks and other recovering Yankees as they look to close out the 2019 season with a division title and more.
