Yankees claim RHP Albert Abreu off waivers from Royals

Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:

  • Claimed RHP Albert Abreu off waivers from the Kansas City Royals.
  • Designated RHP David McKay for assignment.

Abreu, 26, combined to post a 3.46 ERA (13.0IP, 10H, 5ER, 16BB, 12K, 3HR) in 11 relief appearances with the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals this season. In 41 career relief appearances over parts of three Major League seasons with the Yankees (2020-21), Rangers (2022) and Royals (2022), the right-hander has gone 2-1 with one save and a 5.12 ERA (51.0IP, 41H, 30R/29ER, 37BB, 49K, 12HR).

The Guayubín, D.R., native was originally signed by the Houston Astros as a non-drafted free agent Aug. 5, 2013. He was acquired by the Yankees from Houston along with RHP Jorge Guzman in exchange for C Brian McCann and cash considerations Nov. 17, 2016. Earlier this year, Abreu was acquired by the Texas Rangers from the Yankees along with LHP Robert Ahlstrom in exchange for C Jose Trevino on April 2, 2022. He was designated for assignment by the Rangers on May 30, 2022, and acquired by the Royals in exchange for RHP Yohanse Morel on June 2, 2022. The Royals designated Abreu for assignment on June 17, 2022.
