Leading Off

The Yankees are opening the back end of a six-game homestand this evening with the first of three against Washington. As first reported yesterday by YES’ Jack Curry, outfielder Everson Pereira and infielder Oswald Peraza have been promoted from the Minors. Peraza, 23, returns after appearing in 40 previous games for the Yankees including last year’s postseason, while Pereira, 22, is ranked by MLB.com as the third-best prospect in the organization.

How ‘Bout That

Even though he took a no-decision against the Red Sox on Sunday, Clarke Schmidt continued his breakout season! By limiting Boston to a couple of runs over 5.2 innings, Schmidt put together his 20th start of the year allowing three runs or fewer! He’s tied with three other pitchers for the fifth-most in the Majors while Blake Snell and ex-Yankee Sonny Gray lead the way with 22 each. If you’re curious, the leader in that category during the Live Ball Era, which dates back to 1920, is Sandy Koufax. He had 37 starts allowing three runs or fewer in 1966, the final season of a legendary career that was cut short when Koufax retired due to severe arthritis in his throwing arm.

Pinstriped Pulse

Along with the additions of Pereira and Peraza to the roster, the Yankees will also welcome Carlos Rodón back tonight! He returns from a strained left hamstring to pitch against Washington – his best start as a Yankee so far took place against another National League East team when he threw 5.2 innings of one-run ball against the Mets for his first win as a Yankee on July 26. Pereira enters his first stint in MLB after batting .300 with 37 XBH in 81 games this year with Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre. Peraza hit .288 over 18 games in his last run with SWB, including a pair of three-hit efforts in the last two games he played for the RailRiders. After going 2-for-4 with a game-tying three-run homer Sunday, Anthony Volpe is batting .290 in his last nine games, with six of his nine hits going for extra bases. Giancarlo Stanton remains four home runs away from 400 for his career.

Probable Pitchers

Rodon will start tonight opposite 25-year-old Josiah Gray, who should have a memorable evening no matter how it goes. A die-hard Yankees fan during his childhood, Gray grew up in New Rochelle, N.Y., so he figures to have a healthy cheering section on hand at the Stadium. Luis Severino is scheduled to start tomorrow’s game against 24-year-old MacKenzie Gore, who tossed 6.1 shutout innings against Boston in his last start. Gore is one of the key players Washington received from San Diego last year in the Juan Soto trade. The Yankees have not yet announced a starter for Thursday while the Nationals are going to give the ball to another pitcher who grew up a Yankees fan like Gray, upstate New York native Patrick Corbin.
