2009: Pettite/Rivera - A historical combo
Mariano Rivera records the save in the Yankees’ 3-1 win at Cleveland, marking his 58th career save of an Andy Pettitte win. The pair surpasses Bob Welch and Dennis Eckersley (57) for the most win/save combinations for any pitcher/reliever duo in Major League history.
2002: Same game, different milestone for Giambi
Jason Giambi hits the 200th home run of his career in the second inning off Chicago’s Mark Buehrle at Comiskey. He then hits No. 201 in the ninth inning, a three-run blast off Keith Foulke, that breaks a tie and gives the Yankees a 6-3 win.
2000: Not the type of history you want
At Yankee Stadium, former Yankee Randy Velarde completes the 10th unassisted triple play in Major League history. With runners on first and second, Shane Spencer hits a line drive to the A's second baseman who catches the ball, tags out Jorge Posada coming from first base and steps on second, tripling up Tino Martinez who took off for third to complete the rare event.
1995: The Captain’s voyage begins vs. the Mariners
Derek Jeter makes his Major League debut against the Mariners in Seattle. He starts at short and bats ninth (behind Bernie Williams). He goes 0-for-5 with a strikeout. The Yankees lose the game, 8-7, in 12 innings. Jeter plays the entire game.
1984: The firm of Mattingly, Baylor and Winfield
Don Mattingly, Don Baylor and Dave Winfield hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the top of the sixth in a 6-5 loss against the Angels at Anaheim Stadium. The last time the Yankees accomplished the feat was Aug. 10, 1969, when Bobby Murcer, Thurman Munson and Gene Michael did it against the A’s.
1977: Lucky 7 for Figueroa
Ed Figueroa throws his seventh straight complete game, a 6-2 win against the White Sox in the Bronx. Figueroa (and the Yankees) went 6-1 during the streak, and he pitched to a 1.43 ERA. Only two other Yankees pitchers have enjoyed such streaks after this. Mike Torrez threw seven straight complete games later in 1977 and Ron Guidry recorded nine straight in 1983.
1952: Mick caps a Yankee rally
Down, 7-3, in the top of the ninth at Comiskey Park, the Yankees mount a seven-run rally capped off by Mickey Mantle’s two-out grand slam off White Sox reliever Chuck Stobbs. Allie Reynolds, who had been used as a pinch runner for Johnny Mize during the rally, stays in the game to pitch the bottom of the ninth and earns the then-unofficial save. Yankees win, 10-7.
1947: It’s the same as a regular one except you’re running faster
Yogi Berra hits the only inside-the-park home run of his career off future Hall of Famer Early Wynn in a 5-2 Yankees win over the Senators in Washington.
1937: Dickey powers his way to a milestone
Bill Dickey hits a pair of homers in the second game of a doubleheader against the Athletics at Yankee Stadium. They are the 99th and 100th homers of his career. The Yankees win, 10-3.
1928: Ruth and Gehrig filibuster Senators
The Yankees sweep a doubleheader from the Senators in the Bronx. Leo Durocher’s bases-loaded triple in the fourth inning holds up in a 3-2 win. In the second game, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig each hit a pair of home runs. Gehrig belts a three-run homer as part of a seven-run third inning. Then Ruth and Gehrig hit back-to-back long balls to lead off the fourth inning before Ruth homers in the bottom of the seventh. Pitcher Waite Hoyt drives in the Yankees 12th, and final, run of the game with an RBI single in the eight, his third hit of the game.
1927: That’s a lot of insurance!
After coming back from a 6-1 deficit against the Red Sox, the Yankees had an 8-7 lead heading into bottom of the eighth and were looking for some insurance. Babe Ruth leads off the inning with a home run. Lou Gehrig pops out and then the next eight batters reach base, capped by a bases-loaded single from Ruth. The Yankees score seven runs in total and win,15-7.
