2012: Andy is back!
Andy Pettitte returned to the mound at Yankee Stadium ending his retirement following the 2010 season. He threw three no-hit innings against the Mariners before getting tagged for a two-run homer by Justin Smoak in the 4th. He allowed four runs in 6 1/3 innings and took the loss but returned to form against the Reds five days later throwing eight shutout innings and striking out nine.
1985: Mattingly with a Twin killing
Down 8-0 to the Twins after two and 8-1 headed into the 6th, the Yankees rallied for five runs in the 6th capped by a Butch Wynegar three-run homer against his former team. Still down, 8-6, in the bottom of the 9th, former Yankee Ron Davis was going for the seven out save (he came on with two out in the 7th). He walked Ron Hassey, then recorded two quick outs before walking Ken Griffey. Don Mattingly took him deep for the walk-off homer as the Yankees came all the way back to win 9-8.
1979: Reggie flirts with NYY RBI history
Reggie Jackson smacked a two-run single in the 7th inning against the Angels for his 10th straight game with an RBI, one game shy of the team record set by Wally Pipp in 1922, and tied by Babe Ruth in 1931, and Joe DiMaggio in 1939 and 1940. It coincided with a 10-game hitting streak which raised Reggie’s average from .250 to .315. It ended the next day, but there has not been a 10-game RBI streak by a Yankee since (Robinson Cano was the last nine-game streak in 2012).
1977: Figueroa heavenly vs. the Angels
Ed Figueroa threw a three-hit shutout against the Angels at Anaheim Stadium. He surrendered all three hits to lead-off hitter and centerfielder Gil Flores (all singles) and he no-hit the rest of the California lineup. It was his fourth straight complete game in a streak of seven (April 24 – May 29).
1955: Mantle tames Tigers with switch-hitting feat
Mickey Mantle hit three home runs, two left-handed and one right-handed, as the Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers, 5-2, at Yankee Stadium. He became the seventh player in MLB history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game. Mickey went 4-for-4 and drove in all five Yankee runs. It was the only three-home run game of his career and the first of 10 games where he homered from both sides of the plate in the same game.
1947: King Kong, Joe D and Johnny makes three
Charlie Keller, Joe DiMaggio and Johnny Lindell hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the 6th inning off Browns reliever Fred Sanford. Sanford had come in the game after starter Sam Zoldak allowed a 4th inning homer to Keller. It was the 4th set of back-to-back-to-back homers in franchise history, the last coming a year earlier when DiMaggio, Nick Etten and Joe Gordon did it against the Tigers in Detroit on May 23, 1946.
1929: Baseball by the numbers
At Cleveland's League Park, the Indians beat the Yankees, 4-3. It is the first game in Major League history in which players from both teams wear numbers on the back of their jerseys.
