2013: Mariano’s final All-Star Game

In his final All-Star game, Mariano Rivera is named the game’s MVP, becoming the second Yankees player to earn that honor (also Derek Jeter in 2000). The New York crowd gives him a standing ovation when he enters the game at Citi Field in the eighth inning, and the two teams applaud him alone on the mound before taking the field. Mo retires all three batters faced on 16 pitches in the AL’s 3-0 blanking of the NL.

2010: Yankees pay tribute to Sheppard and Steinbrenner

On an emotional night in the Bronx, the Yankees pay tribute to late owner George Steinbrenner and public address announcer Bob Sheppard by wearing patches in the first game since both passed away during the All-Star break. Clips of Steinbrenner play between innings, while no announcements are made from the empty public address booth. On the field, Nick Swisher ties the game in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run off Tampa’s Joaquin Benoit, then wins it with a walk-off single against Lance Cormier to score Curtis Granderson from second.

2006: Mo is fourth to 400

Pitching two innings in New York’s 6-4 victory over the White Sox, Mariano Rivera records his 400th career save. The “Sandman” becomes the fourth Major Leaguer to reach the milestone, joining Lee Smith, Trevor Hoffman and John Franco.

1987: Mattingly’s power surge

Emerging from the All-Star break, Don Mattingly picks up where he left off, homering twice against the Rangers and recording a career-high seven RBI in a 12-3 win. The first round-tripper, off Charlie Hough, is a grand slam -- the fourth of a record-breaking six he will hit this year (and the only six of his career). It is also the sixth straight game in which he has hit a home run -- stay tuned.

1941: Joe DiMaggio reaches 56

Joe DiMaggio goes 3-for-4 and scores three times in the Yankees’ 10-3 win over the Indians. The double and two singles extend his hitting streak to 56 games. Since May 15, the Yankee Clipper has collected 91 hits in 223 at-bats (.408) and tallied 22 multi-hit games.

1920: An even 30 for Ruth

In his first year with New York, Babe Ruth hits his 30th home run of the season, breaking his previous single-season record set the year earlier. He will hit 24 more to finish the season with 54.
