
The New York Yankees announced Thursday that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Jake Bird from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Minor League infielder Roc Riggio and left-handed pitcher Ben Shields.
Bird, 29, has gone 4-1 with a 4.73 ERA (53.1IP, 56H, 30R/28ER, 23BB, 62K, 5HR) in 45 relief appearances with the Rockies this year. He is tied for seventh among Major League relievers in innings pitched this year (tied for fifth in National League). His 62 strikeouts are also tied for the fourth-most among National League relievers this season.
He did not allow an earned run in 24 of his first 28 games this year (March 30 – June 10), going 1-1 with a 1.41 ERA (38.1IP, 6ER) and 50K over that stretch.
Over parts of four Major League seasons with Colorado (2022-25), he has gone 11-10 with one save and a 4.57 ERA (230.1IP, 238H, 127R/117ER, 98BB, 212K, 23HR) in 188 career games (three starts). The Newhall, Calif., native was originally selected by the Rockies in the fifth round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of UCLA.
Riggio, 23, has played in 62 combined games with the FCL Yankees, High-A Hudson Valley and Double-A Somerset this season, batting .264/.370/.567 (61-for-231) with 47R, 14 doubles, 1 triple, 18HR, 45RBI, 33BB and 9SB. Over parts of three Minor League seasons in the Yankees organization (2023-25), the infielder has hit .232/.361/.434 (163-for-702) with 130R, 43 doubles, six triples, 29HR, 101RBI, 126BB and 39SB in 190 games. The Tarzana, Calif., native was selected by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft out of Oklahoma State University.
Shields, 26, has combined to go 1-2 with a 3.03 ERA (35.2IP, 30H, 14R/12ER, 14BB, 42K, 1HR) in nine starts this season with the FCL Yankees, Single-A Tampa, High-A Hudson Valley and Double-A Somerset. Over parts of two Minor League seasons in the Yankees organization (2024-25), the left-handed pitcher has gone 6-7 with a 3.37 ERA (141.2IP, 114H, 63R/53ER, 47BB, 179K, 10HR) in 35 games (26 starts). The Boston, Mass., native was signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 14, 2023. He pitched collegiately at the University of Massachusetts (2018-21) and George Mason University (2022-23).
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have designated OF Bryan de la Cruz for assignment.
