With the Yankees trailing, 8-7, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Jason Giambi takes Blue Jays closer B.J. Ryan deep (on an 0-2 count) for a two-run walk-off homer. The Bombers overcame a two-run deficit all with two outs in the inning.
2006: Beckett gets blasted, Yanks trounce Red Sox
Andy Phillips and Jason Giambi each drill three-run homers in the second inning against Josh Beckett, who gets yanked after allowing seven earned runs while getting only four outs. The seven-run inning helps pace the Yankees to a 13-5 win over the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees record 11 hits in the game, their 12th consecutive game with at least 10 hits, setting a new franchise record.
1981: Walk-off week
The Yankees win in walk-off fashion in extra innings for the third time in four days as Rick Cerone’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the 12th inning scores Larry Milbourne for the 6-5 win over the White Sox. The three walk-offs in four days are part of a season-long nine-game win streak.
1979: Yanks draft Donnie Baseball
The Yankees draft Don Mattingly in the 19th round of the 1979 draft from Reitz Memorial High School in Evansville, Indiana.
1965: Stottlemyre’s 10-inning complete game
Mel Stottlemyre throws a 10-inning complete game despite allowing eight walks. He only gives up two earned runs though, and in the bottom of the 10th inning, the Yankees pounce. With the bases loaded and no outs, pinch hitter rookie Elston Howard hits the walk-off single into left. It is the first of five walk-off hits in his career. Stottlemyre also drills a solo homer in the third inning, one of seven home runs he would hit in his career.
1931: The Great Bambino
With the Yankees trailing the St. Louis Browns, 7-6, in the bottom of the ninth inning, Babe Ruth steps to the plate with a runner on and drills a walk-off home run to right. It is the Babe’s 10th homer of the season, and one of 11 walk-off home runs during his career.
