How ‘Bout That
As two of the Yankees’ many standouts when the team went an MLB-best 21-7 in May, Aaron Judge and Luis Gil were both named on Monday as monthly award winners! Judge earned American League Player of the Month after batting .361 with 12 doubles, 14 home runs, 22 walks and 27 RBI. May was twice as nice for Luis Gil, who won both AL Pitcher of the Month and Rookie of the Month honors by going 6-0 with an ERA of 0.70. By doing so, Gil became the fifth Major League pitcher to ever win both awards in the same month – it hadn’t previously been done since the Angels’ Matt Shoemaker pulled off the double in August of 2014.

Pinstriped Pulse
Back home for six games after a 7-2 California road trip, the 42-19 Yankees are tied with Philadelphia for the best record in the Majors and they have a 2.5 game lead over Baltimore atop the AL East. Juan Soto’s go-ahead two-run home run in the ninth inning Sunday at the Giants was his fifth go-ahead plate appearance this season in the seventh inning of a game or later, tying him with the Orioles’ Adley Rutschman for the most in MLB. Soto’s season totals of a .322 batting average, 17 home runs, 53 RBI and a 1.031 OPS all rank within the top four of the AL. Judge leads the Majors with 21 homers and a 1.075 OPS. Judge and Anthony Volpe both have reached base safely in 29 straight games, tying for the longest streaks in MLB this year. Judge’s two-homer game Friday at Oracle Park, where he watched games as a young fan growing up in California, was his 35th career multi-homer game, tying him with Joe DiMaggio for the fourth-most in Yankees history. Giancarlo Stanton’s RBI ground-rule double Sunday was hit number 1,500 of his career. DJ LeMahieu has hit safely in four straight games following his season debut May 28. Michael Tonkin has a 1.20 ERA in 15.0 innings since joining the Yanks. Clay Holmes had turned in six scoreless appearances since giving up his first earned runs of the year on May 20. Holmes’ season ERA stands at 1.37.

Know The Foe
The 33-26 Twins have won nine of their last 12 games, although they are still six games behind first-place Cleveland in the AL Central and two behind second-place Kansas City. Eight of Carlos Correa’s 11 hits since May 20 have gone for extra bases. Ryan Jeffers leads the team with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs. Alex Kirilloff is batting .333 over his last eight games. Byron Buxton has an average of just .196 with one stolen base in 14 games since returning from a stint on the injured list caused by right knee inflammation.
Closer Jhoan Duran has converted all 10 of his save opportunities this year. Royce Lewis returns to action for the first time since Opening Day, when he suffered a right quad strain. Since 2002, including postseason play, the Twins are just 44-120 against the Yankees. Minnesota’s .268 winning percentage is the lowest for any MLB team during that span against a specific opponent in their own league.

Probable Pitchers
Having been traded from the Twins to the Yankees in March of 2018 while he was a Minor League prospect, Gil will try to build off his prolific May when he takes the mound tonight against his original organization and starts opposite Bailey Ober. Carlos Rodón had a big May himself, going 5-0 with a 2.37 ERA, and he’ll make his first start of June tomorrow when he opposes Chris Paddack in a rematch from May 14, when Rodón tossed six innings of one-run ball to earn the win while Paddack allowed a career-worst-tying 12 hits in taking the loss. The series finale will feature another rematch: Marcus Stroman versus Pablo López. Stroman threw six scoreless innings to pick up a victory May 15 and López took a loss despite turning in a quality start.
Looking Ahead To The Dodgers
After their series with Minnesota is done, the Yankees are going to host Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and the Dodgers for three huge games! With so many big names on each side including a handful of players who could wind up in the Hall of Fame down the road, you won’t want to miss any of the action. YES & the YES App will have special coverage of the series opener Friday starting at 6:00 p.m. with a one-hour Pregame Show from the Stadium.
