Pinstriped Pulse

Riding a seven-game winning streak, the 33-15 Yankees have the best record in the American League and trail Philadelphia by just one game for the best record in the Majors. During their streak, the Yanks have outscored their opponents 41-12, and their pitching staff has given up only four earned runs in 45.0 innings, which includes a streak of 28.0 scoreless frames that ran from the second inning of last Tuesday’s game in Minnesota through the second inning of Friday’s game against Chicago. Juan Soto’s 4-for-4, two-homer performance Saturday was his eighth career four-hit game and his first multi-homer effort as a Yankee. Aaron Judge is batting .438 with seven homers over his last 14 games. Jose Trevino has a .343 average in 70 at-bats since April 13. Anthony Volpe is batting .315 with seven XBH during a 12-game hitting streak. Giancarlo Stanton has posted a .325 average with five homers in his last 10 games. Clay Holmes is up to 20.0 innings this season without an earned run allowed, the third-longest streak by a Yankees pitcher used exclusively out of the bullpen to begin a season since 1974.

How ‘Bout That

What a performance by Luis Gil against the White Sox on Saturday. He set a new Yankees rookie record by striking out 14 batters, and it was only the 16th 14-strikeout game by a pitcher in the distinguished history of the franchise including postseason play. Gil is also just the seventh right-hander to author a performance like that for the Yanks, putting him in a group that includes Gerrit Cole, Masahiro Tanaka and YES’ own David Cone.

Know The Foe

At 25-22 on the season, Seattle leads the AL West, although the Mariners are just 8-9 this month following an 11-3 stretch to close out April. Julio Rodríguez shook off a few quiet weeks to begin the year and is batting .317 since April 16, but he only has six extra-base hits over that span and has just two home runs in 186 AB this season. Rodríguez does have nine stolen bases though, so Yankees catchers will need to be alert when he’s on the bases. Cal Raleigh leads the team with 10 home runs and 25 RBI. Luke Raley is batting .458 with four extra-base hits over his last six games. Closer Andrés Muñoz has converted eight of nine save chances and had delivered nine straight scoreless appearances before allowing a run during his most recent game Saturday in Baltimore.

Probable Pitchers

Marcus Stroman will start tonight’s series opener opposite Logan Gilbert. Clarke Schmidt is going try to keep an excellent run going tomorrow after tossing 14.2 scoreless innings over his previous two outings. He’ll take the ball against Bryan Woo, who has allowed one run in 9.2 innings since making his season debut following a bout with right elbow inflammation that cost him the first six weeks of the year. Nestor Cortes and Bryce Miller are lined up for Wednesday. Luis Gil will follow up his prolific start against Chicago when he faces Seattle in Thursday’s finale. The Mariners are set to counter with Luis Castillo, who has given up no more than two earned runs in each of his last seven starts.

Yankees News & Views: Hal Steinbrenner

Last week, Hal Steinbrenner was a guest on Jack Curry’s “Yankees News & Views,” which you can watch exclusively on the YES App or listen to audio-only via Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Hal spoke with Jack about a variety of topics including the potential for the Yanks to sign Juan Soto to a long-term deal. The Yankees’ Managing General Partner and Chairperson said that he would be open to discussing a potential contract extension with Soto’s representation during the season, something Hal said he doesn’t tend to do normally, but he also said “this is a unique situation and a very unique player.” Download the YES App to watch the full interview: http://onelink.to/yesapp.
