Sophomore Sensation

Anthony Volpe is off to a tremendous start this season, building upon the work he did last year when he became the first Yankees rookie in history to have 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases! Volpe leads the American League with a .424 batting average, including three hits in Sunday’s win over Toronto. Between that game and his four-hit performance in Houston on April 1, Volpe has already matched his number of games with at least three hits from all of his rookie campaign. He also stole a couple of bases against the Blue Jays on Sunday, the fourth multi-steal game of his young career.

At 8-2, the Yankees are tied with Pittsburgh for the best record in the Majors at this early juncture of the season. Juan Soto is batting .333 with eight walks, the second-highest total on the team behind the 10 of Aaron Judge. Thanks in large part to their work, the Yanks are tops in the AL with 47 walks. Giancarlo Stanton has gone deep in back-to-back games, hitting a solo homer Saturday and a grand slam on Sunday. Counting postseason play, it was his 12th career grand slam, tying him with Manny Machado for the most among active Major Leaguers; “Big G” also leads active players with 405 home runs overall. Dennis Santana has made a couple of relief appearances since being called up in place of Jonathan Loaisiga, who is out for the season with an injured right elbow that will require surgery.

A dream came true for Marcus Stroman when he started the Yankees’ home opener Friday, and he put himself in a small group by throwing six shutout innings! Between that outing and his team debut March 30 when he tossed six innings versus the Astros without giving up any earned runs, Stroman became just the third Yankee since 1913, when ER became a stat in the American League, to throw at least 12.0 innings over their first two appearances with the team without giving up an earned run. The others? “Superchief” Allie Reynolds in 1947 and Jim Bouton in 1962.

The Marlins enter Yankee Stadium coming off their first win of the season. Miami lost its first nine games before scoring six runs in the first inning on Sunday and defeating the Cardinals, 10-3. Luis Arraez had four hits in the victory against St. Louis – he’s batting .268 in the early going after becoming the first player in MLB history to win a batting title in each league over back-to-back seasons, doing so with Minnesota in 2022 and Miami last year. Following a strong run in 2023 after the Marlins obtained him at the trade deadline from the White Sox, Jake Burger is off to a hot start, grilling opposing pitchers to the tune of a .308 batting average with a couple of home runs. Burger played with Tim Anderson in Chicago; Anderson left the Windy City for Miami over the offseason, and he's batting .282 so far. The Marlins are one of seven clubs that have a team ERA north of five, with their pitching staff taking a significant hit recently in losing 20-year-old phenom Eury Pérez to Tommy John surgery. 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara is already on the shelf after having TJ surgery this past October.

Probable Pitchers

Nestor Cortes will start the series opener tonight opposite Jesús Luzardo, who has held his competition to a .171 batting average over his first two outings of the season. Carlos Rodón is going to take the mound tomorrow against a pitcher who won a rotation spot in Spring Training, A.J. Puk. While he made a fair amount of starts when he was a Minor Leaguer, this will only be Puk’s third start after the first 142 appearances of his MLB career took place in relief. Stroman is going to try and maintain the great beginning to his Yankees career when he starts against Ryan Weathers, whose last name may be familiar to some of you fans out there! Ryan’s father David was part of the Yanks’ 1996 World Championship team after being a trade deadline acquisition that year.
