On this day in 1988, New York Yankees pitcher Tommy John committed an amazing three errors on a single play.
The madness started when John fielded a ground ball by Milwaukee's Jeff Leonard. John bobbled the ball for the first error; then upon finally picking up the ball, he threw it away for the second error. When Dave Winfield fielded the ball in right field and threw home trying to throw out the runner at the plate, John cut the ball off and threw it wide into the third base dugout, which accounted for the third error, tying a major league record for a pitcher in an inning. Despite the errors, the Bombers still managed to trounce the Brewers 16-3.
