Two of the most highly touted prospects in the New York Yankees organization will get a chance to showcase their stuff during this year's SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, held on Sunday, July 11, at Coors Field in Denver.
Eighteen-year-old outfield phenom Jasson Dominguez (Yankees No. 1 prospect per MLB.com), will join 22-year-old flame-throwing righty Luis Medina (Yankees No. 7 prospect) on the American League roster for this year's game, following in the footsteps of numerous up-and-coming Yankees youngsters through the years.
For Dominguez, the opportunity will be a historic one as he is set to become "the first player to participate in the Futures Game without having played in a full-season league," as recently highlighted by MLB.com insider Jonathan Mayo.
Dominguez officially began his professional baseball career earlier this week when he debuted for the FCL Yankees on Monday, going 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout. Excitement for the switch-hitting five-tool wunderkind has been immense, but talent scouts and evaluators have continually raved about his work ethic and eye-popping physical tools since he signed with the Yankees as an international amateur free agent back on July 2, 2019.
"Between his work ethic and his physical ability, none of that can be denied. The only thing that was denied was the ability to compete. This is another platform for him to compete," said Yankees general manager Brian Cashman of Dominguez's Futures Game opportunity.
Not to be overlooked in the wake of "The Martian" hype train is the huge potential of Medina, a pitcher who boasts a 75-grade fastball and "unquestionably has the best pure stuff in the system," per MLB.com.
Medina struck out 50 batters in just 32 2/3 innings while pitching to a 2.76 ERA over seven starts with the Hudson Valley Renegades earlier this season before earning a promotion to the Double-A Somerset Patriots. At just 22 years old, Medina still has ample time to refine his command and establish more consistency on the mound, but with last winter's LBPRC Pitcher of the Year Award already on his resumé, the sky is the limit for the young righty.
With prospects like Dominguez, Medina and others on the rise, the future is very bright in the Bronx.
