One such outfielder, 23-year-old Clint Frazier, is entering camp with every intention of making the big league club, but he'll have plenty of competition facing him for a spot.
Brett Gardner, Aaron Hicks and Jacoby Ellsbury will all be battling to earn playing time this spring, while the pair of MVP-caliber sluggers in Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge seemingly have their jobs locked in.
Newcomer Jabari Blash, who landed with the Yankees in the Chase Headley trade with San Diego, will also stake his claim for a spot, while youngsters Jake Cave (25) and Billy McKinney (23) get set to open up camp looking to impress the coaching staff as well.
It hasn't deterred Frazier from focusing on his mission.
"I'm going in trying to win a spot," Frazier told Jack Curry on Friday. "My eyes are not set on Triple-A."
In 142 plate appearances over 39 games last season, Frazier slashed .231/.268/.448 with four homers (including one thrilling walk-off bomb), 17 RBI and 16 runs scored. Of his 31 hits collected at the MLB level, 17 went for extra bases.
Power and speed are plentiful for the second-year pro, but with so many veterans jockeying to secure their own roles, Frazier has a tall task ahead of him in camp this year.
When it comes to solving the outfield glut, first-year Yankees manager Aaron Boone will have his hands full, but if nothing else, the two big boppers have made it easy for him by being flexible heading into the new year.
"It's a really good problem that we have," Boone said before camp opened. "I think the one thing that makes it workable is both Giancarlo and Aaron are great people, and I think are open to doing what we need to do to make this the best we can."
From there, Boone and his staff will have to make some tricky decisions as camp plays out, and the standouts set themselves apart.
For what it's worth, Frazier's signature crimson mane shouldn't add any added layers of distraction as he strives to make the big league club.
"Frazier said he got a haircut once a week in the off-season," Curry confirmed Friday. "He's getting another haircut tonight."
As spring training workouts get into full swing this coming week, there will be plenty of positional battles and roster questions to answer before Opening Day, but none will be more competitive than the one brewing in the Yankees outfield.
