Romine, 31, spent parts of eight seasons in the Bronx after his debut in 2011, slashing .239/.281/.366 with 25 homers and 135 RBI over 368 career games.
The longtime backup Bomber backstop joins a Tigers team that finished 2019 with a record of 47-114 - the worst in Major League Baseball last season.
Romine could be on track to be the primary starting catcher for the first time in his career, even if the Tigers face an uphill battle in the AL Central standings next year.
