New York City FC suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Orlando City on Saturday, losing on penalties after the playoff match finished, 1-1. Afterward, head coach Ronny Deila and defender Anton Tinnerholm discussed the match:
New York City FC head coach Ronny Deila:
On the result ...
“I think we had a really good 70 minutes ... we were organized. We had a good match plan. We executed in a good way. We were in control. Then we started to get tired, started to change people, but at the same time, we need to know they were tired as well. We stopped playing. We didn’t move the ball. We didn’t play the way we wanted to play ... we have to admit it wasn’t good enough.”
New York City FC defender Anton Tinnerholm
On being knocked out of the playoffs in penalties ...
“It’s a brutal way to lose. You know how penalties are. It’s almost a 50/50. Today was a mess. No one really knows what was going on. You’d have to take that with the refs, but yeah, losing in this way was brutal. Of course, last year [getting knocked out by Toronto] was tough. This year has been maybe the toughest in our careers and to end the season in this way ... it’s ‘2020’ all over this game.”
