Masahiro Tanaka will make his second spring start today, looking to build on a strong first outing where he tossed two scoreless innings on Tuesday, and Aroldis Chapman will make his second spring appearance behind him. The Yankees also have Tommy Layne and Tyler Clippard, both of whom leave for the World Baseball Classic tomorrow, scheduled to pitch, as well as Luis Cessa. Yefrey Ramirez and Chance Adams would be the next in line for multiple innings, with J.R. Graham, Joe Mantiply, Evan Rutckyj, and Caleb Frare on hand as well.
Here's the lineup that will face Pirates righty Jameson Taillon, a starting nine that includes Gleyber Torres' first turn at second base this spring:
Brett Gardner LF
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Matt Holliday DH
Chris Carter 1B
Aaron Judge RF
Austin Romine C
Ronald Torreyes 3B
Ruben Tejada SS
Gleyber Torres 2B
The reserves are Gary Sanchez behind the plate, Ji-man Choi at first, Jorge Mateo at second, Tyler Wade at short, Pete Kozma at third, and an outfield of Donovan Solano, Dustin Fowler, and Clint Frazier from left to right. Aaron Hicks is the second DH, and the Yankees have six extras, including Miguel Andujar and Billy McKinney, on the bench if needed.
In other camp news:
-James Kaprielian and Justus Sheffield threw simulated games this morning, facing the combo of McKinney and Andujar, while Johnny Barbato and Brady Lail each threw bullpen sessions.
-Tyler Austin will have another scan on his injured left foot on Thursday, and he is hoping that all comes back good and his six-week timeline could be accelerated: "I'm hoping against hope I can maybe get back into action before spring ends."
-Bryan Mitchell will start tomorrow's game in Bradenton against these same Pirates, and the travel roster is starting to become full of projected regulars; Greg Bird, Starlin Castro, Chase Headley, Aaron Judge, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner will all make the trip, as will Austin Romine.
