Meredith Marakovits delivered the latest updates on several injured Yankees, including Dellin Betances, Aaron Hicks, CC Sabathia, Luis Severino and Luke Voit prior to the team's series opener against the O's.
Betances (shoulder) was all smiles after throwing a 20-pitch bullpen session, including 17 fastballs and three breaking balls.
He said the ball was coming out of his hand "really good," and is scheduled to throw another bullpen session of around 25 pitches on Thursday.
Hicks (elbow) hopes to be cleared to throw after no longer feeling any pain in his elbow, he told Marakovits. Hicks will be reevaluated by team doctors on Monday after missing the team's last eight games.
Sabathia (knee) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday, and could potentially return for the Cleveland series later this week should all go well. His last start came against Boston on July 27 at Fenway Park.
Severino (shoulder) said "he felt strong after his bullpen today. No issues physically. Ball continues to come out a little better than expected considering time off," Marakovits reports. He'll face live hitters after throwing one more bullpen, and the Yankees will then have to determine whether to build him up as a starter or utilize him as a reliever for the last portion of the season.
Voit (sports hernia) was spotted running drills on the field as he tries to work his way back after being sidelined since July 30. He's scheduled to hit again on Tuesday, and is optimistic he can avoid surgery this year after reporting no signs of pain during sprints Monday.
James Paxton kicks off the first game of a double-header Monday as the first-place Yankees look to continue their dominance over the Orioles in 2019.
