Voit, who has sported No. 45 throughout his 157-game Yankees tenure so far, tweeted out that he would be switching to No. 59 and surrendering his old number to Cole, who has worn the number his entire career.
"I'm going to wear #59 to honor my brother," wrote Voit. "It was his college football number at West Point while he was the captain of the football team!"
When reports first surfaced that Cole was taking his talents to the Bronx this upcoming season, Voit had some fun on social media asking fans what his new number should be.
Cole told reporters on Wednesday that he did offer Voit an undisclosed prize in exchange for the pinstriped No. 45 jersey, but he wouldn't reveal specifically what it was.
It's safe to assume Voit was more than agreeable in helping to make his new teammate's adjustment to life as a Yankee as smooth as possible, and next season he'll use that opportunity to pay tribute to his brother.
