Yankees first baseman Greg Bird to undergo surgery on right ankle

First baseman Greg Bird will undergo surgery Tuesday to remove a small broken spur on the outside aspect of his right ankle. The surgery will be performed by foot and ankle specialist, Dr. Martin O'Malley, at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

Bird is expected to rehab for six-to-eight weeks before returning to game action. His rehab protocol will commence in New York.

The 25-year-old batted .190/.288/.422 over 178 plate appearances last season but was limited to just 48 games due to injury. Bird hit .244/.426/.512 with three home runs in 13 games during the Yankees' postseason run last year.
