Star additions Breanna Stewart, Courtney Vandersloot and Jonquel Jones join Sabrina Ionescu and Betnijah Laney to create formidable WNBA Title contender

May 12, 2023 – The New York Liberty, who this past off-season added superstars Breanna Stewart, Courtney Vandersloot and Jonquel Jones to a roster that already included All-Stars Sabrina Ionescu and Betnijah Laney, will have 21 games televised by the YES Network and the YES App this coming WNBA season.

The Liberty’s Friday, May 19 season opener at Washington will air live on My9 and the YES App (7 p.m. ET), while New York’s home opener two days later, on Sunday May 21 against Indiana (2 p.m. ET), will be televised live on YES and the YES App. YES is the exclusive regional television home of the Liberty, who has made the WNBA post-season the past two years.

The Liberty dominated headlines this past off-season by adding three of the best players in the league, instantly making the team a favorite to win the 2023 WNBA title. The highest-profile addition was free agent and New York-native, Breanna Stewart, one of the greatest players to ever don a WNBA uniform.

Stewart’s resume includes two WNBA championships, two WNBA Finals MVP awards, the 2018 WNBA MVP award, the 2016 WNBA Rookie of the Year award, four All Star appearances and four All-WNBA First Team selections. Breanna led the league in scoring and made the WNBA All-Defensive Team last season. Stewart was also named to the WNBA 25th Anniversary team in 2021: honoring the league’s all-time top 25 players.

Vandersloot, another free agency signee, is a four-time WNBA All-Star who also has a WNBA title on her resume. She holds league records for single season assists and season and career assists-per-game. Vandersloot has been named to the All-WNBA First Team twice (2019 and 2020) and is a six-time WNBA Peak Performer Award recipient.

Jonquel Jones was acquired to the New York Liberty roster via trade with the Connecticut Sun. Jones was the 2021 WNBA MVP, led the league in rebounds three times and was named to the WNBA All-Defense first team twice. She is a four-time WNBA All Star, was named the 2017 WNBA Most Improved Player and led the league in blocks in 2019.

The trio will line up alongside Ionescu, the overall number one pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft and a 2022 WNBA All-Star, and Laney, a 2021 WNBA All-Star and the league’s 2020 Most Improved Player while with Atlanta. Sandy Brondello, the ninth winningest head coach in league history, returns for her second season at the helm of the Liberty. In 2014, Brondello won the Coach of the Year award as well as a WNBA championship with the Phoenix Mercury.

Chris Shearn and Zora Stephenson will handle play-by-play duties on YES while Julianne Viani-Braen will be the analyst. Meghan Triplett will be the courtside reporter for YES’ home game telecasts. This is YES’ fifth season as the Liberty’s exclusive regional TV partner.
