Pinstriped Pulse

Congratulations to Clay Holmes, an All-Star in 2024 for the second time in his career! He will be one of the Yankees’ representatives on the American League team in Arlington next week, joining Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, both of whom were voted into starting spots on the club. Holmes’ honor was announced Sunday when pitchers and reserves were revealed, and other Yankees could potentially be added to the squad as replacements. Ben Rice is batting .310 over his last eight games – more on him below. Tim Hill has two wins and an ERA of 2.61 in 10.1 innings of work as a Yankee. Luke Weaver’s ERA is 2.12 over his last 17 IP. Gerrit Cole is averaging 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings through his first four starts of the year.

How ‘Bout That

Saturday was a day that Ben Rice will never forget! In his 17th Major League game and his 13th start, Rice became the first rookie in Yankees history to hit three home runs in a game! With a leadoff drive as the Yanks’ first batter of a 14-4 win over Boston followed later by a pair of three-run blasts, Rice authored the 39th three-homer performance in franchise history counting the postseason. He’s the 27th different player to have one, and he also became just the fourth Yankee since the start of the 1995 season to have three homers and seven RBI in a game, a group that includes our own Paul O’Neill.

Know The Foe

The wild card picture is likely Tampa Bay’s only avenue to the postseason this year. At 44-46, the Rays are 5.5 games beneath the playoff cutoff there, but they are 13 games out of first place in the AL East. Kevin Cash’s team enters play against the Yanks after suffering a three-game sweep at the hands of the Rangers following a stretch in which the Rays won 10 out of 14 games. After batting just .174 over his first 68 games of the season, Randy Arozarena has a .294 average over his last 19. José Caballero leads the AL with 24 stolen bases. Former Yankee Ben Rortvedt is batting .346 in 52 AB since June 11. Isaac Paredes is tops on the club with 14 home runs including three in his last 11 games. Yandy Díaz put together a franchise-record 20-game hitting streak that ran from June 7-28.

Probable Starters

Carlos Rodón will start tonight’s opener opposite Ryan Pepiot. Marcus Stroman is scheduled to take the mound tomorrow against Zach Eflin. Nestor Cortes is lined up for Thursday’s finale while Tampa Bay is expected to counter with Shane Baz, who will make his second start back from Tommy John surgery. He delivered a quality start Friday against the Rangers in his first MLB appearance since July of 2022, a year in which he had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow six months before Tommy John surgery that September.

Major League Cricket Featuring MI New York

The 2024 season of Major League Cricket started last week! Reigning champions MI New York have split their first two games, defeating the Seattle Orcas on Friday in a rematch from last year’s title game and losing to the Washington Freedom on Saturday in a contest that was shortened due to bad weather. MI New York will return to action Friday at 3 p.m. with a matchup against the Texas Super Kings, and you can watch the action live on the YES App.
