Liberty sign WNBA’s 2020 Most Improved Player Betnijah Laney

BROOKLYN -- The New York Liberty announced that the team has signed the WNBA’s 2020 Most Improved Player, guard/forward Betnijah Laney. Per team policy, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We are beyond excited to welcome Betnijah to the New York Liberty,” said Liberty general manager, Jonathan Kolb. “As a player, Betnijah represents everything it takes to wear the seafoam and black, from her resilience, to her dedication, to her never-quit attitude. As a person, she is someone New Yorkers will fully embrace as she is as committed to making an impact in the community as she is on court.”

Laney (27) joins the Liberty after a career-best season in Atlanta, where she averaged 17.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per contest, while shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 40.5 percent from beyond the arc. Laney’s 2020 performance garnered her the WNBA’s Most Improved Player Award and a spot on the WNBA All-Defensive First Team.

A native of Clayton, Delaware, Betnijah was drafted 17th overall by the Chicago Sky in the 2015 WNBA Draft where she spent two seasons. Laney has spent the past three seasons in Connecticut, Indiana and Atlanta, respectively. An alumna of Rutgers University, Laney is the seventh Scarlet Knight in Liberty franchise history.
