Yankees designate RHP Johnny Barbato for assignment
Barbato, 24, was acquired from San Diego in exchange for RHP Shawn Kelley on December 29, 2014, and he made his MLB debut in pinstripes last season.
The righty split 2016 between Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and the Bronx, posting a 7.62 ERA in 13 major-league innings and going 3-2 with a 2.61 ERA and three saves in 31 outings for the RailRiders. This spring, Barbato was assigned to Triple-A, where the Yankees were transitioning him to a starting role, and he made his lone start of the season in the RailRiders' opener last Saturday, allowing two runs over four innings.
Thanks to a rule change in the new collective bargaining agreement, the Yankees now have seven days to trade Barbato, release him, or outright him to the Minors.
