Brett Gardner exits game after base path collision
New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner exited Wednesday's game after a rough collision at first base with Tampa Bay Rays infielder Rickie Weeks Jr.
Gardner collided with Weeks while running down the first base line, and left with a bruised jaw and a strained neck. Weeks also left the game as a result of the violent collision.
The veteran Yankees outfielder entered Wednesday afternoon's game slashing .267/.353/.333 with two doubles and six runs scored, and had entered the game as a pinch-hitter for shortstop Pete Kozma.
The Yankees have been forced to overcome a host of setbacks in their starting lineup, after shortstop Didi Gregorius (shoulder), first baseman Greg Bird (illness) and catcher Gary Sanchez (brachialis strain) have all missed time early in the season due to injury.
