Derek and Hannah Jeter expecting their first childMr. and Mrs. Jeter will soon welcome a daughter into the world, and perhaps more?
"Big moments also have a funny way of making you look ahead. Now, pregnant with our first child, Derek and I are looking to the future. He already has a name in mind - he's set on it. (We'll see.)" Hannah wrote.
The two were hitched back in July of 2016, after dating for two years and remaining largely out of the limelight.
Despite their best efforts, however, Derek and Hannah have encountered plenty of challenges in trying to keep their personal lives private, but that remains a tall task for such an accomplished superstar couple.
"Not all levels of fame are created equal," Hannah wrote. "When Derek Jeter walks into a room … the whole room takes notice. Paparazzi followed us at times. People interrupted us during meals. The only way to maintain some sort of privacy - to be together, just the two of us - was to stay in."
The couple traveled the globe together, eventually settling down in Jeter's Tampa, Fla. home, where even there it was at times difficult to maintain privacy from paparazzi and unwanted onlookers. Though the Jeters may never quite be able to blend in among a crowd, Mrs. Jeter is determined to help make life as normal as possible for their new daughter (and potential future offspring?).
"They're going to have to be some strong little people. We don't want them to be defined by their dad's name - for them, we want him to just be "Dad." That will be the piece of him they'll have that the rest of the world doesn't. It will be special, and it will be theirs. Still, though, I want them to know Derek Jeter," Hannah wrote.
The Derek Jeter that millions of devoted Yankees fans got to know over his two decades in the Majors was as remarkable a baseball player as any Yankee in history. For those 20 years, Derek embodied the Yankee Way, and helped captain a star-studded roster of All-Stars and veterans through the demanding New York City atmosphere, all the while collecting one World Series championship after another.
That side of Derek's career was a side that his wife got to know only with time, but once she saw him play firsthand during his last years with the Yankees, she understood the magnitude of what he meant to the City of New York, and to the only team for whom he ever suited up in his inevitable Hall of Fame career.
"During his last game at Yankee Stadium … that's when, for me, everything fell into place. That night, I got it," Hannah wrote. "Part of loving someone means wanting for them the same things that they so passionately want for themselves. And I gradually began to realize that, if baseball was important to Derek, then it had to be important to me."
As the new season of Yankees baseball gets set to begin, the storylines off the field will now include a new addition to the Yankees family, courtesy of Derek and Hannah Jeter. Even though the legacy of No. 2 will be immortalized this season when his number is officially retired at Yankee Stadium, the Jeters' new daughter won't be forced into playing baseball anytime soon.
"Derek and I will want our children to understand that the lives they've been given are so fortunate, in so many ways," Mrs. Jeter wrote. "I hope they'll be honest like their father. I hope they'll be stubborn like me. I hope that they know what they want and won't settle for less. And if they want to play baseball, well, we're gonna have a little talk first."
