Esiason blasts Tebow on radio show

Boomer Esiason is a New York Jets alumnus, and based on the comments he made Monday morning on his “Boomer & Carton” radio show on WFAN, it appears as if he believes Tim Tebow should be, too.

“I’m just telling you right now, I would cut Tim Tebow,” Esiason said on Monday’s show, adding that Tebow’s acquisition is “not in any way, shape, or form, I think, benefiting this team.”

Esiason’s synopsis comes on the heels of Saturday’s Green & White scrimmage at Jets camp in Cortland, N.Y. While starter Mark Sanchez was 11 of 16 for 82 yards, Tebow was just 1-for-4 passing, with his lone completion coming on a fake punt, and fumbled two snaps – a performance that left Boomer less than impressed.

“All you have to do is watch him throw the ball; just watch him,” said Esiason. “I just think this whole thing – at least from my perspective right now – in relation to who Mark Sanchez is, your starting quarterback…in my estimation, (this) is a major mistake.”

Esiason also had some critical comments about Tebow’s play last year with the Denver Broncos, intimating that his departure wasn’t simply a “squeeze” because of the Broncos’ acquisition of Peyton Manning this past offseason.

“Do you think that John Elway (Denver’s EVP of Football Operations) knows a little bit about playing quarterback in this league?,” he asked co-host Craig Carton. “You can say whatever you want about Tim Tebow. He played some of the worst football that any quarterback has ever played in the history of the game, last year, at times.”

He did have at least one piece of positive reinforcement for Tebow, however, citing him as a potential calming influence in a Jets locker room that has been described as a “circus.”

“Maybe (head coach) Rex Ryan and (general manager) Mike Tannenbaum are testing Mark Sanchez to see how he’ll respond, I don’t know,” Esiason said, before adding, “The fact is, you may want Tim Tebow on this team specifically for one reason and one reason only, and that’s the character issue.”
