Yankees add Qualls, option Wade to AAA
To make room for Qualls, the team optioned RHP Cory Wade to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Qualls, who will wear No. 40 with the Yankees, was acquired from the Phillies on Sunday afternoon for cash or a player to be named later, with infielder Matt Antonelli designated for assignment to accommodate his acquisition. The 33-year-old was 1-1 with a 4.68 ERA for Philadelphia this year before being designated for assignment last week.
Wade had a 5.79 ERA in 32 2/3 innings pitched with the Yankees this year, and had given up at least one earned run in five of his final six appearances – including a dismal appearance on Friday night against the White Sox, where he allowed six runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.
