NFL modifies doubleheader kickoff times
Second game of national doubleheaders to begin 10 minutes later than beforeTo address concerns like these, the NFL announced a scheduling change on Thursday that will postpone the start time of the second game of its Sunday TV doubleheaders by ten minutes.
The change sets kick off for those games at 4:25 p.m. ET instead of the previous 4:15 p.m. start time.
In the past, if the scheduled 1 p.m. ET game ran long, fans would miss the end of the early telecast or the beginning of the later game, depending on their market. The 2009-11 seasons saw 44 early games that ran long enough for certain audiences to be switched away – a number that would have been reduced to just 15 had the new later time slot been in effect.
Despite the announced time change, NBC declared that they would not change the production schedule for their Sunday night football coverage, which begins with the “Football Night in America” pre-game show at 7 p.m. ET.
