Hot Stove Report: The Top 20
A status report on baseball's big free agents and trade rumors
1. Matt Holliday, OF
Suitors: Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Cardinals
The Latest: Nothing new has developed on the Holliday front. Both the Angels and Giants have ruled themselves out in terms of bidding for the slugger, while the Yankees insist that they aren't interested. Jason Bay's decision to test the open market will obviously drive the Red Sox to talk to Holliday, and the Cardinals' front office has stated that they will make a "serious push" to re-sign him.
2. Jason Bay, OF
Suitors: Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Cardinals, Angels
The Latest: SI's Jon Heyman confirmed that Bay rejected a four-year, $60 million offer from Boston, setting the stage for Bay to entertain offers once free agency begins. That didn't come as a surprise to Boston GM Theo Epstein, who said that they'll talk to Bay throughout the offseason. As with Holliday, the Yankees say that Bay isn't a priority, something the Cardinals echoed. The Angels are the latest team to show interest in Bay after ruling out Holliday.
3. John Lackey, SP
Suitors: Yankees, Mets, Angels, Mariners, Brewers, Nationals
The Latest: The top free-agent starter available, Lackey continues to draw interest from a number of clubs. The Nationals, surprisingly, have thrown their hat into the ring, though it's unlikely that they'll be seriously considered. The Mets may be the most interested team in the bunch, as they have both the need and the money to bring Lackey to Queens. The Angels, meanwhile, say that they want to bring Lackey back, but only at the right price, and the Dodgers have said that they're not interested.
4. Chone Figgins, 3B
Suitors: Phillies, Angels, Mets
The Latest: Figgins' return to Orange County could be in the hands of Lackey, with Angels owner Arte Moreno telling the LA Times that the Angels don't have the financial resources to re-sign both Figgins and Lackey. The Phillies, meanwhile, will apparently try to go cheap in filling their open spot at third base, looking at Mark DeRosa, among others, instead of Figgins. As for the Mets, David Lennon of Newsday wrote that the team would install Figgins in left field if they sign him, keeping Luis Castillo at second and ending any chase of Bay or Holliday.
5. Roy Halladay, SP
Suitors: Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers
The Latest: Halladay is back on the trade market, and the Red Sox and Yankees are in on the chase. The New York Post believes that the Mets won't be contenders for the Jays ace, while Bob Nightengale of USA Today said that the Dodgers are focused on Halladay.
6. Javier Vazquez, SP
Suitors: Brewers, Tigers
The Latest: Word is growing that Vazquez or Derek Lowe will be moved this offseason, though by all accounts, Braves GM Frank Wren is looking to move Lowe and extend Vazquez. A rumored trade of Vazquez to the Dodgers was shot down last week, and the Brewers and Tigers have been mentioned as possible matches.
7. Johnny Damon, OF
Suitors: Yankees
The Latest: Things remain quiet with Damon, with ESPN's Jayson Stark reporting that the Yankees will negotiate "firmly" with Damon and Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune saying that the Yankees are more likely to bring back Damon over Hideki Matsui. No new suitors have emerged for Damon, however.
8. Hideki Matsui, DH
Suitors: Yankees
The Latest: As with Damon, Matsui's interest level around the league is low. Matsui told the New York Daily News that it would be disappointing not to return to New York next season, but that he would welcome a new challenge. As with Damon, few if any bidders have emerged for Matsui, and it's unclear what level of talks the Yankees and agent Arn Tellem have had over the slugger's future in pinstripes.
9. Mike Gonzalez, RP
Suitors: Yankees, Red Sox, Nationals, Braves
The Latest: Gonzalez' name popped up this week for two big reasons. First, the former Braves closer has switched agents to Scott Boras. Second, Boston and New York have expressed interest in the hard-throwing lefthander, with the Red Sox asking for Gonzalez' medical records. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal presented conflicting reports from the Yankees, with one source saying that the Yankees are pursuing Gonzalez and another saying that they're staying put with their bullpen.
10. Rafael Soriano, RP
Suitors: Yankees, Red Sox, Braves
The Latest: Wherever Gonzalez goes, Soriano seems destined to follow. Boston and New York have expressed interest in Soriano, along with Gonzalez. Whether the Braves offer arbitration will determine in large part just how interested the Red Sox and Yankees are.
11. Billy Wagner, RP
Suitors: Red Sox, Braves, Nationals, Orioles, Astros
The Latest: Wagner's agent, Bean Stringfellow, said that eight teams are interested in the former Mets closer and Red Sox reliever, including Boston. Of the five teams that Stringfellow disclosed, all but the Red Sox have talked to Wagner about being a closer. All the interest makes it very likely that the Red Sox will offer Wagner arbitration.
12. Derek Lowe, SP
Suitors: Brewers, Angels, White Sox
The Latest: Lowe is a likely candidate to be shipped out of Atlanta, and according to Ken Rosenthal, the Braves offered him to Milwaukee for outfielder Corey Hart, only to be turned down. Los Angeles and Chicago are two other names that have popped up as potential destinations.
13. Milton Bradley, OF
Suitors: Rays, Rangers, Jays
The Latest: A virtual lock to be moved out of Chicago, Bradley has been linked repeatedly to Tampa in exchange for Pat Burrell. Jayson Stark said that the Cubs don't want to eat most of Bradley's remaining salary, so he may be exchanged for another bad contract. Toronto's Vernon Wells is a possibility, albeit a terrifying one for Cubs fans.
14. Edwin Jackson, SP
Suitors: Mariners, Brewers
The Latest: Jackson is a recent addition to the trade rumor mill, with Bob Nightengale suggesting that a potential three-way deal between Detroit, Seattle and another unnamed team involving Jackson and the Mariners' Brandon Morrow is in the works. The Mariners have been linked to Jackson already this offseason, and the interest seems genuine.
15. Curtis Granderson, OF
Suitors: Yankees, Cubs, Mariners
The Latest: After a week of speculation, things have died down on the Granderson front, with many in Detroit now saying that the Tigers will not have a fire sale and that Granderson is unlikely to be moved. That said, teams remain interested, with the Cubs apparently heading the pack.
16. Rich Harden, SP
Suitors: Mariners, Red Sox, Orioles
The Latest: The only new news on Harden is that the Cubs don't believe they can afford him, which would seem to suggest that the oft-injured righthander will not settle for a one-year deal or anything that's heavily incentivized. That's bad news for mid-level suitors like Seattle.
17. Erik Bedard, SP
Suitors: Mariners, Dodgers, Red Sox, Orioles
The Latest: The Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec believes that a return to Maryland could be in the cards for Bedard. Other than that, interest in the left-hander is nonexistent as of yet.
18. Vladimir Guerrero, OF/DH
Suitors: None
The Latest: Guerrero is apparently no longer a wanted man in Los Angeles, with few believing that the Angels will choose to bring back the aging slugger. A move to the Marlins has been tossed around online, but it remains a rumor with little reality to it.
19. Marco Scutaro, SS
Suitors: Blue Jays
The Latest: Scutaro's agent says that interest in his client is high, and that teams are looking at him at all three infield positions. But there's been little speculation as to who those teams are. The Reds are one team with a shortstop vacancy, but Scutaro is too pricey for their liking. A return to Toronto can't be ruled out.
20. Jose Valverde, RP
Suitors: Astros
The Latest: Valverde's agent says that his client would love to return to Houston, and the Astros apparently want him back as well. No other team has publicly courted the closer.
