Kay: A-Rod Steals the Spotlight
Michael Kay fields questions about A-Rod, Bernie Williams and much more
Editor's Note: The Yankees are nearly two weeks into the 2007 season and problems, and hundreds of YESNetwork.com users e-mailed their questions on the topic to Michael Kay this week and he answered the best of the best. If you'd like to send a question for a future Q&A with Michael or any of the other YES Network broadcasters, click here.
Dear Michael,If A-Rod leaves after a monster season, how do you think Brian Cashman will go about replacing a power right-handed bat with 40-50 homers? Thanks,
Eric Schienkopf Arlington, Va.
Dear Eric,
I truly don't know. There is no one person out there that can duplicate those numbers while playing third base.

Dear Mr. Kay,When A-Rod walks after this season is over, who do you think is to blame? The pathetic fans who booed him out of the city or the media for making him look like a jerk? I have been a strong supporter of A-Rod from the start and I can't believe the way he has been treated. The Yankees are paying him what, $15 million per year? That's a steal for one of the greatest players of all time.
James D'Arienzo Barnegat, N.J.
Dear Mr. D'Arienzo,
I don't know if it will be any one thing but I think the strongest blame has to go to the fans that turned him into a pariah for no reason other than he's not Derek Jeter. The treatment toward this guy has been patently unfair but the fans have the right to say whatever they like. They are under no obligation to cheer for anyone. Also, you can not discount the fact that A-Rod has Scott Boras as an agent and even if the fans were great for the past three years, I still think Boras would advise him to opt out of his contract in order to maximize his earning potential.

Dear Michael,I am not dumb enough to believe Roger Clemens would not help the Yankees' rotation, but what is the cost of adding him, not so much in salary, but in the development of Kei Igawa and the effects of the luxury tax (the ridiculous tax that small market teams use for profit and not development)?
With the current payroll, he would cost twice as much wouldn't he? If Roger comes back to baseball and signs with the Yankees, where do you think he'll fit in? I'd much rather see him pitch and then retire for good after this season in Houston.
Thanks for your time.
Mark Colone Belmont, N.C.
Dear Mark,
I don't think the Yankees are that worried about Kai Igawa's development. If he's pitching well then he will be in the rotation and someone else will be replaced by Clemens. As for the luxury tax, well, the Yankees have cut payroll significantly over the past few years and I'm certain they would not be squeamish about paying a bit more to sign Clemens for one season if it ensures them a chance to get into the playoffs and win the World Series.

Hey Michael,One thing that concerns me is the Yankees' bullpen will be overused like it's been in the past. I know they have more depth this year. However, to me it seems like Brian Bruney does not have the same velocity on his fastball that he had last year. What do you think?
Andrew Cohen New York, N.Y.
Hey Andrew,
If you have been watching the first two weeks, none of the relievers, except for Mariano Rivera, are throwing as hard as last year. There has been a preciptous drop in velocity from Bruney, Scott Proctor and Kyle Farnsworth. The Yankees have to hope the velocity picks up when the weather heats up and that this is not a manifestation of overuse last year.

Hi Michael,Yankee fans are getting excited about the opening of the new Yankee Stadium. I would hate to see some expansion team such as Tampa Bay or the Angels open up the new Stadium. Has any thought been given to allowing the Yankees to start the season with interleague play to allow the Dodgers or Giants who would be storybook opponents to open the new Stadium?
Alan Herson Jacksonville, Oreg.
Hi Alan,
I have not heard any plans about who is going to be the opponent but I doubt it would be an interleague game since baseball has never strayed from specific interleague periods during the season. And I really don't think it matters who they open against because the star of the day will be the new ballpark and not the opponent.

Dear Michael,What are the chances the Yankees will get Bernie Williams back this year? It just doesn't seem like the Yankees with him.
Len Berkeley Heights, N.J.
Dear Len,
I don't think the chances are good. I wouldn't say there is no chance but I would say the odds are against it.

Michael,Just want to start out by saying that I am a big fan of yours. I even met you once several years ago in the Yankees Gift Shop in Legends Field.
I have to question you on a statement you made during last night's Yankees vs. Twins game. You criticized the Twins organization for not "ponying up" another $125 million for a retractable dome. I agree with you completely on the issue that a retractable dome stadium would be a necessity in Minneapolis. The Twins owner is a multi-billionaire and can certainly afford the extra expense.
However, both the Yankees and Mets are constructing new stadiums without retractable domes. Don't you think that the Yankees should have a retractable dome on the new Yankee Stadium? Playoff games with the Red Sox in 2003 and 2004 were canceled due to inclement weather. The
cancellations allowed the Red Sox to line up their pitching. I'd be
interested to hear your thoughts on this.
Thanks,
John Azzopardi Sellersville, Penn.
John,
Good point but both the Yankees and the Mets are not going with the roof because in New York it would cost another $200 million. The Yankees have done studies on the amount of games that are rained out and there is simply not a fiscal reason that would back up the expenditure. You mention instances where it has hurt the Yankees, but you can't possibly believe that New York is as cold as Minneapolis in April or October. Not putting a dome in Minnesota is simply foolishness that will come back to haunt them many times over the next few decades, not to say causing countless bouts with pneumonia for many fans.

Michael,I think its crazy how fans and media want teams who play in cold weather cities to open on the west coast in the future. It's a great idea, but no one was complaining about this two weeks before the season started. Reason being: no one could predict that it was going to be as brutally cold as it was. For the scheduling committee to schedule teams on the east coast to open on the west coast, that would create a lot of cross-coast trips later in the season for teams on the west coast, which I'm sure they don't want. What do you think?
Stephen King Albany, N.Y.
Stephen,
I'm sorry but you have to go with the odds and the odds are it's going to be inclement weather in April in the northeast corridor of this country. Sure, you could have years where it is quite pleasant, but again, you have to play the odds. As for the west coast teams coming east later in the season, well, you have to come here at some point so what different does it make when? At this point, the eastern teams go out to the coast toward the end of August and no one is complaining about that.

Hi Michael,I have a suggestion for Major league Baseball. Both leagues would be improved if they played by the same batting rules. I suggest that the DH be retained for the American League and added to the National league, but the pitchers' spot in the lineup be added to the American league and retained in the National league. That way there would be 10 spots in the lineup, but the advantages of having the pitcher's bat would help in both leagues and the DH would not be lost. What do you think?
Fred Dankert Oxford, N.Y.
Hi Fred,
Interesting concept but National League teams wouldn't go for it because they do not want to add a big-money veteran slugger to their roster, someone they would have to pay big money to rather than a light hitting, low-salaried extra infielder. Not gonna happen for financial reasons alone.

Dear Michael,Do the Yankees have to carry three first basemen? With the injuries happening in the outfield, shouldn't they be carrying five outfielders? It was a huge benefit last year.
Mike Whitehouse, Ohio
Dear Mike,
They think they are carrying two first baseman and one DH. I have said from the beginning they should simply carry Doug Mientkiewicz and add another outfielder because Mientkiewicz hits lefties as well as righties. Carrying Josh Phelps is simply a case of overkill but I did see Phelps taking fly balls in the outfield when the Yankees were in Minnesota.

Hi Michael,I was listening to ESPN radio this past weekend and they said that the Yankees and the Mets won't make the playoffs this year. I am just curious on what your take is on this. And are cards still being forward to Bobby Murcer? Thanks!
Elena New York
Hi Elena,
Although I have a show on ESPN radio 1050 in New York, on from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday thru Friday I think the people who said that are wacked. There is practically no way that both the Mets and the Yankees won't make it. Maybe one could have a shockingly stinker season, but not both.
Also, Bobby receives all the mail that is sent to Yankee Stadium.

Hello Michael,Why do you always say "See Ya" when the opposite team hits a home run at Yankee Stadium? We Yankee fans only want you to say that when a Yankee hits a homer. It just doesn't sound right when you say it when the opposing team gets one. It really depresses me to hear you say that. Please think about it.
Mary Ellen Dishaw Ogdensburg, N.Y.
Hello Mary Ellen,
I'm sorry I depress you but a home run is a home run.

Dear Michael,I was wondering if you could answer a question for me about YES that I have been curious about for a long time. With so many memorable games from the 1970s and 1980s, does YES only rarely show an old game on Yankee Classics? I think fans would definitely enjoy seeing a game from those years, for example any one of Don Mattingly's gems including when he won the batting title on the last day of the 1984 season, or when Phil Niekro won his 300th game in a Yankee Uniform, or the Bobby Murcer five-RBI tribute to Thurman Munson game, to name a few. Any insight?
Greg D. Commack, N.Y.
Dear Greg,
I think it comes down to the simple fact that we don't own the rights to all of those games. The games we broadcast were purchased from other entities and I'm sure the powers that be simply try to buy the most famous moments and the games in which they happened.
